Gran Canaria Landmarks and Monuments

Gran Canaria is a historical island, containing many impressive landmarks, monuments and old buildings. The Las Palmas City Hall (Casas Consistoriales) is one of Gran Canaria's most notable landmarks and was first built around 500 years ago.

Further landmarks and monuments in Gran Canaria include the Llano de las Brujas archaeological settlement, the 16th-century Palacio Episcopal, and the Plaza de Santa Ana, one of Gran Canaria's main public squares, standing in the heart of Las Palmas.

Catedral de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Las Palmas Cathedral)

Dating back almost 600 years, Las Palmas Cathedral is one of the oldest and most important landmarks on the whole island of Gran Canaria. With a magnificent Neo-classical facade and a Gothic-style interior, highlights at the museum include three naves, palm-shaped columns and the Diocesan Museum of Religious Art, which is situated in the cathedral's southern wing and contains a number of important religious paintings.

Casas Consistoriales (City Hall)

Now home to the local government, the Casas Consistoriales is a historic landmark dating back to the early 1500s. Open to the public, much of this notable building was rebuilt in the mid-19th century, following a destructive fire. Highlights include a large gallery area, imposing architecture and many detailed period features, including stone arches and columns.

Plaza de Santa Ana (Santa Ana Square)

Standing in the heart of Las Palmas, the Plaza de Santa Ana is a particularly historic spot and is surrounded by many old buildings. A popular meeting place with both Gran Canaria locals and tourists, Plaza de Santa Ana has origins back in the 16th century, although was considerably revamped in the 19th century.

Llano de las Brujas (Witches' Plain)

A notable archaeological settlement known as the Witches' Plain, Llano de las Brujas features a many ancient constructions which were used for storing grain. A number of old burial mounds are also situated here. Llano de las Brujas is located in the Telde area of Gran Canaria.

Roque Nublo (Rock Cloud)

One of Gran Canaria's most striking natural landmarks, Roque Nublo is an impressive monolith which measures around 80 metres / 262 feet. Located high above much of the island, Roque Nublo offers spectacular views and can be found close to the town of Tejeda.

Palacio Episcopal (Bishop's House)

Dating back to the 16th century, this ancient building has been extended and renovated a number of times over the years. With impressive architecture and many well-preserved features, the Palacio Episcopal is open to the public and is a much-visited site.

Tara y Cendro

The ancient Tara y Cendro caves were once home to the area's past pre-Hispanic inhabitants and are an important reminder of the island's past. These cave dwellings were created both by hand and historic volcanic activity and were once the centre of a thriving community, many years ago.
